Hong Zhu An, ( Chinese b. 1955 ), Lan Ting Xu, 'Preface to the Poems Collected from the Orchid Pavilion', A large calligraphic painting of 'a poetic composition of nature', painted with blues, greens and yellow with a poem inscribed to the bottom right in ink, on rice paper, 114cm x 181cm, mounted on silk, framed and glazed.
The preface describes the Spring Purification Festival of 353AD. Forty-two which 42 literati gathered at the Orchid Pavilion, they composed poems, played music and enjoyed wine. The gentlemen engaged in a drinking contest, wine cups were floated down a small winding creek, the men sat along its banks and whenever a cup stopped, the man closest to the cup was required to drink it and write a poem. In the end, 37 poems were composed.
This lot was commissioned on behalf of the vendor, and is sold with a catalogue of the artist's works published in 2003, ISBN 981-05-0090-4.
