THE LATE SIR CLIFFORD (1907 – 1982) & LADY CURZON (1898 – 1977)

The following twenty four lots are from the collection of the concert pianist the late Sir Clifford Curzon and Lady Curzon (formerly Lucille Wallace). Sir Clifford is well known for his amazing ability and interpretive powers as a concert pianist and his wife is equally well known for work as a harpsichordist and for her part in the modern revival of the instrument. They both shared a passion for art and literature that is not so well documented. Curzon’s appearance on Desert Island Discs was, putting aside his banter with Roy Plomley, in his own words very revealing about his life and art.

His uncle was Albert W Ketelby and on the programme his first choice was one of Ketelby’s songs “In a Monastery Garden.” His comments after the record were that “even the cover of that music I remember very well and I think it awakened other later loves of mine, painting and gardening. ... I’ve collected paintings all my life and I’m a very ardent gardener. My gardener might think otherwise. I’m very, very good at telling other people how gardening should be done; that is after all a form of gardening. Of course I have to take care of my hands.”

He was a student at the Royal Academy of Music, winning in 1924 at the age of seventeen, the prestigious Macfarren Gold Medal. Having finished his studies at the Academy in 1926 he continued to give concerts until he heard one evening Arthur Schnabel in a small hall in Berlin; “... I suddenly heard Schnabel ... I thought I had never heard anything so marvellous and there was only one thing to do ... the only thing to do was to start life again in Berlin.”

From 1928 to 1930 he studied with Schnabel in Berlin and it was here that he acquired a love of German art and where he first met Stephen Spender who became a lifelong friend.

On his return from Germany, between engagements, he gave piano lessons and one of the young ladies that Clifford taught in the 1930’s was Natasha Litvin whose family had emigrated here from Lithuania. Natasha was to become a concert pianist in her own right. In 1940 she met Stephen Spender and they married in the following year.
