The following 28 lots are from the collection of John Lewly Cornforth the architectural writer, furniture historian and connoisseur. A childhood interest in country houses and their decoration (he enjoyed pictures of country houses before he could read) began with Shugborough Hall where invitations to play with the young Patrick Anson (latterly the Earl of Lichfieid) and his sister Elizabeth allowed him to indulge his passions to the full.

Educated at Repton and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge where he came under the spell of one of his tutors, Michael Jaffe, who in later life became a director of the Fitzwilliam Museum. They were lifelong friends and the portrait reproduced above shows John with his goddaughter, Deborah, one of Michael Jaffe’s children.

He began working and writing for Country Life Magazine in 1961 contributing hundreds of articles on country houses, their furniture and contents. Many of these articles were expanded into books and pamphlets. These together with his ever inquisitive mind as to how the houses and their decoration had evolved made a significant contribution to the understanding and future preservation of them.

Throughout his life he was an avid collector of beautiful things and a rescuer of distressed and abandoned pieces that he would proudly display as embellishments to his house. A watercolour portrait by John Ward reproduced in Country Life (May 13 2004) shows the table chest (lot 104) on a small table behind where he is busily writing on another.
