Lot 268: A ' Winchester College ' oak refectory table of traditional form

To be sold at our Fine Art & Antiques followed by Vintage Clothing and Wine on 20th Feb 2014

Catalogue Description

A ' Winchester College ' oak refectory table of traditional form

A ' Winchester College ' oak refectory table of traditional form, with five plank top, on square legs and stretchers, probably late 16th - early 17th century, 46in x 35in, 28.5in high.

The table has been subject to the ministrations of countless generations of small boys, many of whom have left their initials, some even their full names and the date of their loving abuse - for all still to see. Much of the earlier evidence of grafitti is now indistinct through centuries of wear and use, however later legible names include, Clarke, Croft, Lawrence and Warren, and in particular, one C. Graham, whose enthusiasm to be remembered for posterity apparently knew no bounds, for both in 1829 and 1830, he left his contributions in full.
